Doctor

Scene Analysis

What happens in your scene? Outline the basic events.
In the scene I was assigned to, the doctor and Lady Macbeth's attendant, referred to Gentlewoman are waiting to see Lady Macbeth sleepwalking. They are waiting to see what is wrong with Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth comes out and talks about all the people Macbeth killed and keeps on rubbing her hand, saying that she must wash the blood off of her hand. The doctor says that Lady Macbeth can't be cured by him. The doctor says that he won't tell anyone what he saw.

What do you think are the key purpose of your scene? In other words, why is this scene important? (Keep these purposes in mind as you make decisions about blocking and characterization.)
I think the key purpose of my scene is to show how Lady Macbeth has changed. She used to be a manly woman, without any fear. However, in this scene, we see that Lady Macbeth fears that she might not be able to get rid of her guilt of the crime Lady Macbeth committed.

What are your reactions to this scene?
I think this scene is very important, because it shows one of the key theme of this play, which is corruption of people with power. It showed how much Lady Macbeth had been affected by murder. She looked strong on the outside, but we get to know that she actually has fears in her too inside. I was surprised by how much Lady Macbeth has changed.

Character Report

No matter how big or small the part, every actor needs to know the answers to the following questions for
his/her character. Answer the following questions for the character(s) you will play.

What does your character want in this scene (this is the objective)?
My character, doctor, wants to observe Lady Macbeth sleepwalking and find out what made her sleepwalk in order to cure her.

What is your character’s motivation for doing what he or she does?
Doctor is observing Lady Macbeth, because he was hired by Macbeth to cure her illness.

What obstacles stand in his or her way?
Doctor finds out that he cannot cure Lady Macbeth, because her sleepwalk is not due to any physical illness; it is due to her mental pain.

What happens when your character confronts these obstacles?
He says that he cannot cure her, but promises to keep the secret that Lady Macbeth had blurted out.

Are there any distinctive elements in your character’s way of speaking? (Is his or her language elaborate,
plain, musical, or what?)

He is very concerned about Lady Macbeth's state. He calmly responds to shocking truths and does his job. His tone is concerned but calm.

What is your character thinking during the scene (this is the subtext)? (How does he or she react to the
other characters and events?)

Inside, Doctor is very shocked. However, he professionally finishes his job and promises keep the secrets.

Reflection

1. Evaluate the performance of your group. What went well? What didn’t go well?
I think our group expressed emotions better than the practice. However, being nervous made me stammer a bit.
2. How well did you contribute to your group?
I did my best to find a costume for my character, and I gave ideas about Lady Macbeth's movements. I told her to wander around as we talk and sit when we say that she is rubbing her hands.
3. How well did you perform as an individual?
I think I could have done better. Even though it was much better than the practice, I was too nervous to deliver the lines clearly.
4. What could have improved your scene performance
We could have used lights to enhance our performance. However, we could not, because we wanted lights to turn on horizontally, but the class room lights only turn on vertically. Also, if we memorized our lines, the performance would have been better, because we can focus more on our emotions than lines.
5. How did the scene performance help you better understand the play.
It really made me observe each character's emotion, making me understand all characters in our scene. The best thing was that I got to know Lady Macbeth's inner feelings.
